Southern Virginia University presents the world premiere of “FLY,” a bold new musical inspired by the true story of the 1929 National Women’s Air Derby.

Performances run Feb. 13–14 and 19–21 at 7:30 p.m. at the SVU Performing Arts Center.

Set during the Golden Age of Flight, “FLY” follows pioneering aviators Louise Thaden, Marvel Crosson, Amelia Earhart and other daring female pilots as they compete in the first-ever crosscountry air race for women.

With legendary humorist Will Rogers adding wit and wisdom along the way, the journey becomes about far more than winning a race. Facing public skepticism, sabotage, and life-threatening danger, the pilots discover that unity — not rivalry — is their greatest strength. “FLY” is a soaring celebration of courage, camaraderie, and the women who changed aviation forever, said a spokesperson.

This SVU theater production is especially unique as it was developed in collaboration with the show’s creators, composer Jordan Kamalu and book writer Taylor Peck, who worked directly with the cast and creative team.

“I’ve loved working with the actors at SVU,” Peck shared. “Writing a new musical is a collaborative process, and I’m glad they’ve left their mark on all future productions of ‘FLY.’” “The cast and creative team have done a wonderful job bringing the show to life,” Kamalu agreed. “I am confident audiences will love the show, and I am proud of everyone for their willingness to take on a new musical, something we see far too little of in theatre broadly.”

Audience members will also have an opportunity to engage with the creators during special post-show talkbacks with Kamalu and Peck following the opening weekend performances on Feb. 13-14.
