A new dementia support program for those living with dementia and their loved ones is coming to Maury River Senior Services in Buena Vista.
Care Companions – Navigating Dementia Together, a new partnership between Valley Program for Aging Services (VPAS) and ConnectionsPlus Healthcare + Hospice, provides specially designed activities for those living with dementia while their caregivers participate in a guided support group.
The program is designed to improve quality of life for family caregivers by giving them an opportunity to share experiences and strategies in a group setting. They also gain access to dementia education, respite and resources to ease their burden.
At the same time, structured activity sessions can reduce anxiety, build a sense of competence, increase social connection and spark joy for those living with dementia.
Care partners gather at Maury River Senior Services in a safe, accessible setting for the program, which is led by trained staff and Washington and Lee student volunteers.
“We are deeply grateful for our partnership with VPAS,” said Edwina Addison-Vita, AIC operations director with ConnectionsPlus Healthcare + Hospice. “By engaging participants in meaningful activities and giving caregivers a moment to breathe, learn, and feel supported, we are creating a model of care that uplifts everyone involved — including volunteer students who learn by serving.”
Care Companions – Navigating Dementia Together meets the first and third Thursdays of each month from 1:30 to 3 p.m. beginning on Feb. 5, at 2137 Magnolia Ave. in Buena Vista. There is no cost to participate in the program, but registration is required.
