Quid De Cogitatione Glenn Rose
RINO is an acronym for “Republican in Name Only.” It’s an epithet MAGA supporters use to denigrate and censure any Republican who doesn’t pay fealty to Donald Trump and all of his policies, no matter how bizarre or self-serving.
M A G A is Donald T r u m p ’ s acronym for “Make A m e r ica Great Again,” begging the question, “Where have his acolytes and he been for the last 81 years as the United States became the preeminent military and economic power in the world?
Dwight Eisenhower was the supreme commander of Allied Forces in Europe, leading a multinational army in defeating Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy in 1945. As a five-star general of the Army, Eisenhower served as the first supreme commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The United States had become the strongest country on the planet and the leader of the free world.
As the first postwar Republican president, Eisenhower held the American alliances against Soviet expansion and aggression. A t ask o nly a great nation could do.
Republican President Richard Nixon made major diplomatic moves in his overtures to what we called Red China. Tensions e ased. T he w orld became safer with thoughtful communication between adversaries.
Unfortunately, Nixon allowed his personal ambitions to drive him to spy on the Democratic Party. It led to him resigning instead of being impeached. And impeached he would have been.
On Aug. 7, 1974, Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona led a delegation of senior Republicans including House Minority Leader John Rhodes and Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott to tell Nixon that the votes for impeachment in the House would be “nearly unanimous.”
When Nixon asked Goldwater how his backing in the Senate against conviction (which would remove him from office) was, Goldwater reportedly told him “maybe seven, and I’m not one.”
Nixon announced his resignation the next day.
This was era of true Constitutional and patriotic leadership, where important representatives of the people were looking at the facts. Even Nixon accepted it was his o nly c hoice. H e d idn’t try to cling to power by sending a mob to “fight like Hell” and try through violence and intimidation to stop the legal duties of Congress.
Republican Vice President Gerald Ford became president and sought to carry on the policies that Nixon and he had been elected to do.
The United States was still strong in its place in the world.
Republican Ronald Reagan served as president at a pivotal moment in world history, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, the Russian opposition to NATO.
Reagan was diplomatic, yet forceful, as he prodded the Soviet leadership under Mikhail Gorbachev to loosen the Russian grip on Eastern Europe. Reagan’s measured approach led to the peaceful end of the Soviet Union and communism in Europe.
America was now the world leader, not just militarily or economically, but because we were Reagan’s “Shining city on a hill”!
Republican George H. W. Bush was president when Iraq seized Kuwait. Bush put together a coalition that included NATO allies France and England to expel Saddam Hussein from Kuwait.
America remained the world’s strongest country.
When 9-11 saw American soil attacked in New York City, Republican George Bush had the support of all the members of NATO in the retaliation against Osama bin Laden and his radical followers in Afghanistan. ( Reportedly 140 Danish soldiers died fighting for NATO.)
I realize that most readers, being historically literate, already know all these facts.
These presidents were the real Republicans. The RINOs are the usurping MAGAs and their leader, Donald Trump. They, being historically illiterate, have no loyalty to the positive achievements of these real Republicans.
They won’t mention, let alone question, Trump’s efforts to dismantle NATO and place tariffs on member nations that refuse to back his pet projects: capturing a Noble Peace Price and annexing Greenland.
They won’t talk about Trump’s juvenile name calling of people, including the leaders of our closest allies, who disagree or challenge him.
MAGAs are fawning yes men and women who only parrot what Trump says. They have the same monotonous tune of platitudinous non-accomplishments.
I suggest some truthful, praiseworthy things they could say.
“It’s been over ten years since Trump bragged about being able to grope women with impunity.”
“Trump no longer visits Jeffrey Epstein’s island in the Caribbean.”
“Trump no longer is accused of fraudulent enterprises in the State of New York.”
“Trump has never declared personal bankruptcy. Those were the companies he ran that did.”
Donald Trump is an isolationist because he doesn’t want to reciprocate for the things he covets.
But he doesn’t have to quit anything.
He’s driving our friends and allies away.
The United States will become isolated as one by one they leave us standing alone because our leadership can no longer be trusted.
Then there really will be a need to make America great again!
