EMTs Praised For Efforts Following Accident

Jan. 19, 2026 Editor, The News-Gazette: I write in order to praise our local EMT workers. My story began while I was calling my animals in for the day. Somewhere in the distance I heard a strange noise. My German Shepherd, who has search and rescue genes, looked into the distance and then at me. She clearly wanted to investigate. We drove up the dirt road that is Little Dry Hollow. Near the crest of a steep hill was a U.S. postal service truck on its side with a man standing next to it. I asked, “Are you alright? He answered, “No!” Almost everyone on Little Dry Hollow would have done what I did because we look out for each other.

The young driver was in shock. He said he was in great pain and thought he had multiple broken bones. He was also stoically brave. His phone was lost somewhere under the truck. With difficulty I half-carried him into my truck. The shepherd anxiously nuzzled him as he passed the truck bed.

We drove back to the farm to get my phone. I called 911 and the dispatcher calmly and clearly recorded the important facts and arranged for an ambulance to meet me at the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department. Two members of the Lexington Fire Department arrived there, and with great professionalism transferred the young man into the ambulance and took him to the hospital. We are very fortunate to live in a place with such excellent EMT personnel. JAMES R. ARNOLD Lexington
