‘Streetcar’ Coming To W&L Screen

The next National Theatre Live broadcast to be screened at Washington and Lee University will be “A Streetcar Named Desire” on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

NTL’s Gillian Anderson (“Sex Education”), Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown”) and Ben Foster (“Lone Survivor”) lead this cast in Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece.

It will be presented locally by W&L’s Lenfest Center’s Outreach & Engagement on the Stackhouse cinema screen in Elrod Commons.

Filmed live from the Young Vic Theatre on the West End, the production has a running time at 3 hours, 18 minutes, including an interval, and is rated R. Gillan Anderson won Best Actress at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards and was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Actress for her performance.

The story follows Blanche DuBois, whose fragile world crumbles as she turns to her sister Stella for solace. However, her arrival disrupts the lives of Stella and her husband Stanley — her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski.

This adaptation is noted for its innovative direction and the strong performances of the entire cast, making it one of the most popular titles in the NTL series, having been viewed by over 1.2 million people worldwide.

Tickets are required. Prices are $20 for general admission and $8 for students. Online ticket sales are available at https://my.wlu.edu/ lenfest-center/a-streetcar-named-desire. Tickets can also be bought the night of the performance onsite at the Stackhouse Theater.
