In the last game of the 12th annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout, the Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team earned a 39-31 road win over Rockbridge County late Friday night at Rockbridge County High School in Lexington.
It was the third meeting of the season between the two teams, with the Wildcats (7-9) winning the first two games. With the victory, the Fighting Blues (5-11) snapped a four-game losing streak in the series with RC. Earlier this season, the Wildcats defeated PM 50-30 on Dec. 29 in Lexington before overcoming the Blues 40-36 on Jan. 3 in Buena Vista.
RC and PM were originally scheduled to face other teams on Saturday at Rock the Ribbon, an American Cancer Society fundraiser, but all of Saturday’s games were canceled due to the forecast for a winter storm. The RC-PM girls’ game was added on Wednesday, just two days before the event began.
The Blues are scheduled to return to Pioneer District action at home against Highland County on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., while the Wildcats are slated to return to Shenandoah District action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Check back here for weather-related schedule changes.
Due to the winter storm, the stories and photos from the Rock the Ribbon games will be in our Feb. 4 newspaper. Coverage of games that took place Thursday and before will be in our Jan. 28 newspaper.
