After a slow start, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team rallied in the second half before falling short 63-53 at home against Shenandoah District rival Alleghany on Tuesday night in Lexington.
The Wildcats (3-11 overall, 1-7 district) trailed most of the first half, but sophomore forward Fisher Newhall hit a half-court buzzer-beater to cut Alleghany’s lead to 26-10 at the end of the first quarter.
RC started the second half with an 11-0 run, but, following an Alleghany timeout, the Cougars (11-3, 7-1) responded with a 9-0 run to regain the momentum. The Wildcats kept the score close, but Alleghany held on for the win.
It was an impressive shooting from beyond the arc, as RC and Alleghany each hit nine 3-pointers.
Brayden Camden led RC with 19 points, sinking three 3-pointers and making five steals, while teammate Bradi Ziegler scored 17 points, hitting four treys. Newhall added eight points, and Christian Moore chipped in five.
Leading the Cougars were Bubby Entsminger and Talyn Elliot with 16 points, while Jalen Raether scored 13 points, and Desmond Jordan chipped in 11.
The Wildcats will continue district action at home against Staunton on Thursday, starting with the junior varsity game at 6 p.m.
