Tyree Taking County Position

When Buena Vista City Manager Jason Tyree announced his resignation earlier this month, he said he planned to continue to live in Buena Vista. That will be easy to do since the new job he will be taking is Rockbridge County zoning administrator, a newly created position.

Rockbridge County Administrator Spencer Suter announced Tyree’s hiring Monday morning. The new position was approved by the Board of Supervisors during last year’s budget process by combining two unfilled positions in the Office of Community Development, with minimal budget impact.

“Last year, during budget deliberation, the Board recognized that Office of Community Development would greatly benefit from [having] a dedicated zoning administrator, a function currently filled by Community Development Director Chris Slaydon. This move was and is intended to add efficiency to our operations,” said Suter.

He noted that Tyree brings a wealth of local government knowledge and experience to the county. In addition to working five years as Buena page 4 See Tyree

, Vista city manager, he worked previously as Buchanan town manager in Botetourt County and as a certified zoning official for the city of Lynchburg.

“I look forward to joining the Rockbridge County team and transitioning my skills to the service of the citizens of Rockbridge County.” said Tyree.

“Jason’s experience with both the city manager role and previous roles in zoning administration will serve the county well. I am looking forward to Jason joining our dedicated staff in the Community Development office,” said Slaydon. “We have worked extensively with him in his capacity as Buena Vista city manager, and his knowledge and professionalism in collaborating with regional colleagues and the public will bring tremendous value to our team.”

“I have always enjoyed working with Jason and think he will easily transition into the county’s operational team,” said Suter. “I am very glad we were able to keep his talents right here in the region.”

Tyree will start work with the county after he completes the task of helping with Buena Vista’s transition to new leadership. When he submitted his resignation to Buena Vista Jan. 6, Tyree gave a three-months notice, per his employment contract, but he could leave sooner, depending upon when an interim city manager is hired.
