Rockbridge County officials were considering the feasibility of suing the federal government for thousands of dollars in revenue sharing funds that had been denied to the county in the past. - Benjamin Huger Jr., long associated in the management of Huger-Davidson-Sale Co. Inc. and president of Huger Distributing Co., announced his retirement. Huger-Davidson-Sale, founded as a wholesale grocery business, sold foods to institutions through the company’s Institution Foods division.

- Carl R. Newcomer, president and chief executive officer of Newcomer Ford and Dodge Inc., announced S.T. “Tom” Royall Jr. was a new partner in the Lexington car dealership.

Satisfied that junk cars at a planned automobile recycling and salvage business would be screened from public view, the Buena Vista Planning Commission approved a site plan and recommended approval of a conditional use permit for Auto Recylers. - Col. William F. Byers, 84, retired professor of English and fine arts at Virginia Military Institute, died. With his colleague, Maj. William Badgett, he founded the fine arts department at VMI. - The Planning Commission rejected a change to an ordinance that would set the maximum height of free-standing signs along the interstate at 100 feet.
