Three Rockbridge County High School indoor track and field athletes set personal records at the Virginia Track Coaches Association Winter Classic on Friday at the Edward S. Long Track Complex in Penn Laird.
Competing at Rockingham County’s new indoor recreation center facility, two RC freshman girls set personal records (PRs) in their second meet this season. Sarah Lewis placed 13th in the 55meter dash in 8.02 seconds, and Kaitlyn Higgins finished 25th in the shot put with a toss of 18 feet, 1 inch, a PR by 18 inches.
Also stepping up for the Wildcats was Celia Jones, placing sixth in the 55-meter hurdles in 10.22 seconds and finishing 18th in the 55-meter dash in 8.14.
Jones and Lewis teamed up with Ariana Mitchell and Keziah Howard in the girls’ 4 X 200-meter relay, and the Wildcats placed eighth in a season-best time of 2:00.86.
Mitchell also competed in the high jump, placing seventh by clearing 4-8. She had already qualified for the Class 3 state meet in the high jump by clearing 4-10 in the first meet of the season on Dec. 10 at Fork Union Military Academy.
In the girls’ 500-meter dash, Audra Roney placed 17th in 1:42.76. Competing in the long jump for the RC girls was Maria Calomeris, finishing 20th with a leap of 116.75.
Cate Wilson led RC in the shot put, placing 19th with a throw of 23-9.5.
The lone RC boy competing, junior Finbar Looney, finished 26th in the shot put with a toss of 31-0.5, a PR by nearly three feet.
The Wildcats will return to the Edward S. Long Track Complex for the East Rockingham Indoor T&F Invitational on Friday, Jan. 23, before traveling to Fork Union for the Fred Hardy Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24.
