Jan. 7, 1976

Pierre Francis Daura, an internationally known artist, died at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. A native of Spain and a resident of Rockbridge Baths, Daura was 79 years old. - Melissa Gail Staton was the first baby born in the new year at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. - Maynard Reynolds of Natural Bridge District was elected chairman of the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors.

MeadWestvaco threatened to sue the Regional Industrial Development Authority, the Rockbridge Area Economic Commission and the city of Buena Vista over the IDA’s decision not to build a consolidated distribution center in Buena Vista. - Buena Vista City Council received preliminary cost estimates on two major capital projects. An upgrade to the city’s wastewater treatment plant was set at $27 to $30 million, while renovations and an addition to the municipal building came in at $4.8 million. - Rockbridge County High School football quarterback Chase Prasnicki was presented with the Stuart P. Brewbaker award. The award was named after a legendary Lexington High School coach and was the highest honor a football player could achieve.
