The Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team suffered a 59-26 home loss to Turner Ashby on Friday afternoon in Lexington.
With the win, the Knights (10-1) completed a sweep of the regular-season series with the Wildcats. When the teams met on Dec. 22 in Bridgewater, TA won 56-22. The Wildcats would improve to 4-6 with a 40-36 win at Parry McCluer on Saturday. (See separate story.)
In Friday’s game, TA capitalized on RC turnovers and raced to a 10-0 lead, ending the first quarter up 18-7. For the game, the Wildcats committed 21 turnovers, while the Knights had 11.
RC head coach Darrell Plogger said the game was a “carbon copy” of the teams’ first showdown.
“They’re really, really good, but we made them look extra good,” said Plogger of the Knights. “Live ball turnovers just kill you. We’ve got to get better with the basketball.”
The Knights increased their advantage to 37-12 by halftime and carried the momentum into the second half, leading 50-17 at the end of the third quarter. With reserves playing in the fourth quarter and a running clock most of the way because the lead was 30 points or more, each team scored nine points.
TA’s Maisey Miller led all players with 15 points, making three 3-pointers, while teammate Alyse Sheffey scored 10 points, and Ava Myers chipped in six points for the Knights.
Lola Mulitalo paced the Wildcats with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Bella Dorey scored six points and had four assists and two steals, and Genesis McCoy scored four points.
Plogger said the Knights are on a “different level, but still I talk all the time about us playing against us. They didn’t do anything to force probably half of our turnovers. That was selfinflicted.”
