Master Gardeners Plan Free Seed Event

The Seed Saving Group of the Rockbridge Area Master Gardeners Association will sponsor the annual free seed give-away on Saturday, Jan. 24, between 10 a.m. and noon in the community room of the RARA Piovano Building, 350 Spotswood Drive in Lexington.

RAMGA members have been busy harvesting their local gardens, then processing and packaging seeds from over 100 different varieties, including annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, grasses and shrubs. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer seed-related questions and will have informative handouts and examples of seed starting equipment.

Each of the featured seeds has been researched and recorded in RAMGA’s online Seed Library located at www.RAMGA.org. Information includes plant description, cultural requirements and planting instructions with pictures and web links for even more information. Attendees are encouraged to visit the seed library in advance to assist in seed selection.

In addition, seeds that have been generously donated by several commercial seed suppliers and community gardeners will be distributed.

This year RAMGA is also holding a special seed event preview session led by Faith Vosburgh on Jan. 17 at 10:30 a.m. in the Piovano Room of the Rockbridge Regional Library in Lexington. Vosburgh will present information on the seed varieties that will be available at the Seed Event with additional information about preferred seed starting methods for various types of plants such as vegetables or natives. She will also highlight which species might be appropriate for pollinator or butterfly gardens, bird feeding, or deer resistance.

Beginning Feb. 1, the RAMGA seed collection will be housed at the Rockbridge Regional Library and available for free while supplies last — just let the library desk know the quantity taken.
