Where Are We With Ukraine, NATO Allies?

Letters

Dec. 29, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: If you drive or walk through downtown Lexington, you will see multiple houses with Ukrainian flags, including my own, supporting Ukraine in its brutal invasion by Putin’s Russia. In recent months, this invasion has gotten even more brutal with deaths in civilian apartment complexes in cities throughout Ukraine.

Our president seems to regularly change his views on the subject. Conversations with Putin and then expressing how unhappy he is with his friend Putin. And now this peace plan. This must be driving our NATO allies crazy, including Poland which has had railroad tracks with Ukraine sabotaged. There was no consultation with our European allies, much less Ukraine.

Now we learn of the details of a 28-point peace proposal given by the U.S. to Ukraine. Secretary of State Rubio reportedly told senators that the plan was based upon a Russian wish list, something Rubio later denied. The plan includes cessation of land in the east, some of which is not occupied by Russia. Ukraine is also to decrease the size of its army by 30 percent and pledge never to join NATO.

My dad who served in WWII must be turning in his grave. DON HASFURTHER Lexington
