Decorations Go Missing From Trail

Dec. 29, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Before Christmas some anonymous good soul hung gold ornaments from bare branches along the Chessie Trail near mile marker No. 1. It seemed a very touching gesture intended to bring joy to dozens who walk the pathway. Ghosts of Christmases past and simpler times emerged from one selfless reminder.

I followed suit and hung blue ornaments. Others joined as well. As of Dec. 22 there were more than two dozen decorations for all to enjoy in the spirit of Christmas and of community.

After returning from a family gathering out of state, I walked the Chessie again on Dec. 27. Not one of the ornaments remained save for two intended as squirrel treats. So much for Christmas and community.

Apropos of 2026 we can ring out the old (Peace and Good Will) in favor of the new (I, me, mine). Increasingly, we live in a culture where entitlement and narcissism have bumped integrity aside. Whatever is within reach and left unguarded is fair game for confiscation. Apparently the trend has reached Lexington.

Happy New Year. JOHN SAPPINGTON Rockbridge County
