A Bustleburg area family has been temporarily displaced after a fire destroyed their attached garage and left smoke and water damage to their home.
Nathan Ramsey, Rockbridge County fire-rescue chief, reported that the garage fire was reported just before noon last Friday at 1905 Decatur Road.
Firefighters a rrived o n t he scene quickly, he said, and were able to contain the fire to the garage, although it was a total loss. The incident happened during Friday’s strong winds, but, Ramsey said, the winds actually assisted in the containment effort as they were blowing away from the house.
There was only minor damage to the house, but there was moderate smoke and water damage to the living area, enough that the firefighters requested that the power be turned off and the family of four forced to temporarily relocate. The Red Cross provided money for three nights in a hotel while the family made short-term living arrangements.
Units responding to the fire included the South River, Rockbridge Baths, Goshen, Kerrs Creek and Raphine fire departments, the Fairfield Rescue Squad, Rockbridge County Fire-Rescue and the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office.
The cause of the fire, Ramsey said, is undetermined.
