Government Brief

Lexington

Lexington City Council Thursday unanimously approved a motion to adopt a resolution amending several sections of the city charter.

Among the amendments proposed are amending the charter to reflect the fact that the city now has an elected school board; allowing city council discretion on whether it will require the city manager to live within the city during his tenure; changing the appointment of the city attorney from a four-year term to an “indefinite term”; and reflecting the consolidation of the Rockbridge County and Lexington general district and juvenile/domestic relations courts.

The proposed amendments will be sent to Del. Terry Austin to be introduced in the General Assembly in 2026. Charter amendments must pass the House of Delegates and Senate and be signed by the governor before going into effect.
