Reaction to Rockbridge County Supervisors’ decision to study the conversion of the Robert E. Lee Hotel into a jail was mixed. Apparently the supervisors had not reached out to local law enforcement officials for their opinions on the matter. - The Rev. Bernard Bangley was making a film about Rockbridge Baths called “What Mean These Stones?” A focal point of the film was Bethesda Presbyterian Church cemetery and its gravestones. - The Lexington High School team of John Hodges, Anne Sauder and Kathy Williams finished second in the fourth annual Radford College Mathematics Rally.

The Rockbridge Area Economic Development Commission reversed its earlier decision to ban MeadWestvaco from building a redistribution center in Buena Vista’s industrial park, even though Buena Vista City Council was against the construction of such a facility in the city. - The Rockbridge Area Christmas Basket Packing Day at the Virginia Horse Center drew over 400 volunteers. Nine hundred thirtytwo families benefited from the program. -A man on crutches told the congregation at Fairfield United Methodist Church that he and his family were stranded after the fuel pump in their car failed while they were on their way home from his daughter’s funeral. But when an eagle-eyed member of the congregation identified the man as the same person who had tried a similar scam at a church in Staunton, the man fled the sanctuary, leaving his crutches behind.
