Catching The Spirit Of The Holidays

Editorial

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Back-to-back snowfalls on Friday and Monday mornings have left a winter wonderland in their wake, and more might be on the way later this week. We may or may not have a white Christmas this year, but two weeks out the weather we’re having is enough to put even the most Grinch-like among us in the spirit of the holidays.

We were disappointed by the cancellation of the Lexington Christmas parade this past Friday evening due to the wintry weather, but there have been quite a few other festive events to lift our spirits. Buena Vista’s Christmas parade on Thursday was one of its best in years. The parades in Glasgow and Fairfield on Saturday were equally glorious events.

We still have a Christmas parade to look forward to in Goshen this Saturday at 4 p.m. Other holiday happenings in our midst this week include Bill Mc-Corkle presenting organ preludes for Advent and Christmas on Thursday at noon at the Lexington Presbyterian Church, and Carols in the Courtyard at the old VMI Barracks Thursday at 7:30 p.m., to be followed by a candlelight service in Memorial Hall at 8.

There are three performances of “The Nutcracker” by the Rockbridge Ballet at W&L’s Lenfest Center Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 and 6:30 p.m. Luminary Nights are occurring at Natural Bridge State Park Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. Santa Claus is going to be at Collierstown Baptist Church Saturday from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Also, Boxerwood is having its Gifts of Nature program this Saturday, the Jackson House Museum is hosting its “Christmas at the Jacksons” this Friday, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Thornhill Road is bringing back its Festival of Nativities next weekend.

Hundreds of people spread holiday cheer this past Saturday when they gathered at the Virginia Horse Center to pack up Christmas baskets to be distributed to families in need throughout the Rockbridge area. The numbers were especially high this year for this annual tradition – 3,407 persons were served representing 1,149 families. Volunteers distributed 1,860 boxes and 574 toy bags.

It’s heartwarming to think about all of the good that volunteers in our community are doing. Another area organization that is spreading cheer now and throughout the year is Unity4kids. It assists families in need with food, gas, utilities, furniture, clothes, shoes, baby items and other necessities. To find out more, contact [email protected].

It is indeed a joyous time of year, even as the days are getting shorter and the temperatures chillier. The snow we have enjoyed this past week is making the holidays a little more special this year. We hope all of our readers are catching this holiday spirit and are able to partake of the innumerable festive events coming up between now and Christmas.
