Fiber Arts Teacher To Discuss Oshi-e

Rockbridge Regional Library in Lexington will host author and fiber arts teacher, Wendy Duke, on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 1 p.m.

Duke published her book, “Contemporary Oshi-e,” an introduction, levels 1 and 2, at the age of 76 as a legacy for what she describes as “a viable and truly different craft than anything else out there. It has endless possibilities. It has ignited the imagination of most all of my students, near and far. I spent over two years actively writing and creating this book, and now I am ready to share!”

She will describe Oshi-e and do a short demonstration and also display examples of her work.

Oshi-e is the ancient Japanese art of making embossed pictures from fabric. In her book, Duke offers instruction and inspiration and walks readers through a brief history of the craft, which may have originated with the creation of dolls used in Shinto rituals. The book is available to borrow at Rockbridge Regional libraries and the author will sign personal copies after the program.
