Float Designed For Lexington Parade, But …
Last Thursday, volunteers at Boxerwood put the finishing touches – fresh greenery, jingle bells, and lights – on the nature center’s float for the Lexington Christmas Parade.
The float, titled “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” after the poem by Robert Frost, was designed to look like a page out of the children’s picture book of the same title. The centerpiece is a horse named Twiggy, constructed from recycled wood and grapevine by volunteer Earth artist Jay Sullivan.
Halestone dancers dressed as snowflakes planned to swirl in front of the float as it made its way down Main Street.
“Imagine everyone’s disappointment when a snowy Thursday evening curtailed all those festive plans,” said Jess Sullivan, float organizer. “But not for long. Despite the cancelled Lexington parade, Boxerwood was determined to come up with another opportunity for Rockbridge families to admire the float.
“We’re not going to let it snow on our parade,” said Sullivan.
And so, families are invited to come to the nature center this weekend to see the float and take selfies with Twiggy. There is no cost to visit Boxerwood, play in the snow if it lasts, and explore the wintry woodlands.
Families who come this Saturday between 1 and 5 are also invited to join in Boxerwood’s annual Gifts of Nature workshop. The workshop is open to all ages for $10 per family. Participants craft decorations that will feed the winter birds and spruce up their own homes, inside and out. For more information about Gifts of Nature, visit www. boxerwood.org.
