Nov. 14, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: While I wholly appreciate the work and service of all the veterans, something about the parade dismayed me: helium balloons.
I heard that 800 were given out. If that number is not accurate, at least there seemed to be an awful lot.
It is widely known that when these balloons lose their air and fall back to earth their limp plastic remains may kill birds, wildlife, and livestock.
Perhaps the use of helium balloons could be banned in the city and county. This could include business and home use and celebratory gatherings of all kinds, such as baby gender reveals, birthdays, engagements, and more. TONI WILLIAMS Lexington Students
