Students from Lylburn Downing Middle School spread dirt around trees they helped plant at Carilion Hospital last week. The project was funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Forestry and allowed for more than 50 trees to be planted on the hospital property to help improve the city’s tree canopy. A variety of native species trees were planted, including black gum, dogwood, redbud and hornbeam. Overseeing the planting were Lexington City Arborist Ray Ulrich, members of the Rockbridge Area Master Gardeners, Friends of Woods Creek and Lexington Public Works employees.
