The DeLaney Center at Washington and Lee University will host its third annual symposium with the theme, “Race, Military Service, and the Modern South” on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 5:30 p.m. in Stackhouse Theater.
This event will feature presentations by Dr. Robert Jefferson, associate professor of history at the University of New Mexico; Dr. Annette Osborne, president of the National Association of Black Military Women; and Gen. Cedric Wins, 15th superintendent of Virginia Military Institute.
During an hour-long panel, these individuals will engage the symposium theme guided by their study of or affiliation with the American armed forces. Following their talks, a moderator will lead the panelists in a conversation centered on issues raised during their remarks. The symposium will conclude with a questionand- answer session where the audience will join the discussion.
In the aftermath of Veterans Day and high-profile military readiness assessments, this program provides timely meditations on an evocative subject, said a spokesperson.
To enrich their investigation, attendees are encouraged to check out the DeLaney Center’s “At the Table” event focusing on military veterans and their families, which will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of Lylburn Downing Middle School.
