For the past several years, members of the Green Hills Garden Club have assisted Boxerwood with its water stewardship project, “Growing Native.” In the spring, fourth grade students pot bare-root seedlings which are tended in the Boxerwood nurseries for about two years until the seedlings are mature enough for the students to plant in riparian areas or in other community tree plantings. The club was recently recognized by National Garden Clubs Inc. with a Certificate in Appreciation for Participation in an Environmental Education Project with Youth. Here, members of the club’s Youth Committee - Keedie Leonard, Marsha McLaughlin and Julie Lipscomb - display the certificate that was presented at the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs Shenandoah District fall meeting.
