Housing Conference Covers Varied Issues
LEXINGTON CITY MANAGER Tom Carroll leads a session at the Regional Housing Conference at the Virginia Horse Center.

More than 150 local leaders, housing professionals, and community members gathered recently for a full day of collaboration and discussion at the recent Regional Housing Conference at the Virginia Horse Center.

The event opened with remarks from Tracy Lyons, executive director of the chamber of commerce, followed by presentations that explored housing trends, economic development, and community solutions.

Highlights included Ann Cundy and Jeremy Crute of the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission sharing insights from the Regional Housing Study; Ryan Price of Virginia Realtors discussing economic and housing market trends; and Sara J. Dunnigan from GO Virginia and DHCD (Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development) addressing the link between housing and economic growth.

Lexington City Manager Tom Carroll led a session on “Common Misconceptions in Zoning and Permitting,” and Chris Thompson of Virginia Housing presented “Building a Rock-Solid Foundation,” highlighting Virginia Housing’s programs that are driving innovation and strengthening housing opportunities across the commonwealth.

Panel discussions on “Success Stories in Housing” and “Housing for All” showcased creative, community-driven approaches that are making a measurable difference in the region, said a chamber spokesperson.

The day concluded with “Raising the Roof: A Call to Action” and a “Housing Hoedown Happy Hour,” offering attendees a chance to connect and celebrate progress.

To keep the momentum going, organizers announced a series of three follow-up work sessions designed to turn conference insights into action.

These sessions will explore policy options to expand local housing supply, identify land for new market-rate homes, and highlight opportunities to build more housing without subsidy. They will also focus on strategies to support lower-income families.
