RHS Plans Year-End Open House

On Saturday, Dec. 13, from noon to 4 p.m., help the Rockbridge Historical Society celebrate the close of its “Revolutionary Year” with a special reception at the RHS Museum (101 E. Washington St.), as the RHS looks toward our national celebrations of American independence in 2026.

Gather with Rockbridge neighbors and fellow enthusiasts of local history during a final weekend showcasing its paired exhibits: “Rockbridge at Play: Toys, Games & Histories,” and the pioneering statewide traveling exhibition for the 50th anniversary commemorations of “Virginia & the Vietnam War.”

Those displays follow on the heels of RHS’ “Rockbridge & Vietnam Roundtable and Open Mic,” which is free and open to the community on Dec. 7 in the RCHS auditorium, from 2 to 4 p.m. They’ll also prime attendees for the Dec. 19 screening of the 1968 episode from Ken Burns’ Vietnam War documentary, which takes place at the Lexington library from 6 to 8 p.m., and the Vietnam-themed installment of RHS’ new “Revolutionary Reading Group,” planned for Jan. 13, also at the Lexington library, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The year-end reception also ties together elements from the other major series RHS has staged this fall, on the coming of the American Revolution, and the centennial of the Appalachian Trail. Take home free swag and calendars featuring historic photographs to share those stories with others.

For stocking stuffers, pick up a “Virginia 250 Passport,” offering discounted admission to historic sites across Virginia, and access to history-themed contests and prizes. And for more glow around your menorah or presents under the Christmas tree, purchase historic maps, RHS publications, and a variety of used history books spanning a range of topics and eras. Follow RHS Facebook and Instagram pages for updates.
