The antenna being placed on a 50-foot tower near Glasgow was expected to bring clear TV reception to all of the area’s residents who signed up for cable. - Very dry conditions were resulting in a number of forest fires, most caused by hunters carelessly discarding their cigarettes. - James M. Hickman of Buena Vista was the first person to receive treatment at a satellite kidney dialysis unit located in the parish hall of R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church and provided by the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem.

Theater at Lime Kiln’s board of directors voted unanimously to suspend operations by the end of the year unless it received the necessary funds to keep from closing. - The Rockbridge Area Economic Commission voted 5-4 to rescind its earlier invitation to MeadWestvaco to build a distribution center in Buena Vista. - Most area deer hunters were using the state’s new phone option to register their kills as opposed to using check-in stations.
