Isn’t It Time To ‘Carry On Civilized Discourse?’

Nov. 17, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: I appreciate that The News-Gazette publishes letters that address diverse topics and issues, sometimes on the local and sometimes on the national level. I also think it’s healthy that it publishes opinion pieces by various writers who have differing approaches and points of view.

The majority of the Gazette’s opinion writers choose a particular subject or theme that promotes reflection on the part of the reader without being combative, partisan, or hostile. I thank those writers for their civility and depth of character. It is tiresome to read bellicose writers who repeatedly resort to finger pointing and name calling because of their party affiliation, whichever party that may be.

After so many years of being politically divided, isn’t it time for us to find a way to carry on civilized discourse, sometimes stand in each other’s shoes, and try to understand perspectives other than our own? J. SMYTH Lexington
