Join members of the Rockbridge Bird Club this Friday, Nov. 21, at 9 a.m. for a walk through Locher Tract, one of Rockbridge County’s natural gems.
The 378-acre tract is located in the Jefferson National Forest across the river from Natural Bridge Station, offering riverfront, wetland and forest views along two trails. Birders will be on the lookout for Wood Duck, Yellowbellied Sapsucker, Brown Creeper, Swamp Sparrow and Hermit Thrush in these varied habitats. The walk is the third in a new series of outings to local hot spots scheduled at the end of each month.
Non-members and inexperienced birders are welcome to participate. Birders should bring binoculars and wear sturdy shoes. In the event of rain, the walk will be canceled.
To get to Locher Tract, take Arnolds Valley Road (Va. 759) over Greenlee bridge to cross the James River. Make the first left on James River Road (Va. 782) and follow it to the very end, onto Forest Road #3093. This gravel road will end at the parking lot for the Locher Tract.
