Southern Virginia University’s theatre program is presenting “The Thanksgiving Play,” a razor-sharp satire by acclaimed playwright Larissa FastHorse, this month.
After its first weekend run last week, the play resumes this Thursday and continues through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the SVU Performing Arts Center.
Nominated for multiple awards and recently featured on Broadway, “The Thanksgiving Play” hilariously explores the intersection of good intentions, cultural missteps, and performative wokeness. When a group of well-meaning — but painfully unaware — theatre educators attempt to devise a politically correct Thanksgiving pageant, chaos quickly ensues. The result? A fast-paced, laugh-out-loud comedy that’s as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.
Directed by David Dwyer, this production offers a timely and relevant theatrical experience that invites audiences to reflect on the stories we tell — and the ones we leave out.
“This play is incredibly funny, but also smart and deeply self-aware,” said Dwyer. “It challenges us to think critically about representation, history, and how we engage with the idea of ‘allyship’ — especially in creative spaces.”
Seating is limited, so early reservations are encouraged. Tickets can be purchased at bit. ly/svuthanks and Eventbrite. com. Prices are $12 for general admission, $10 for seniors and $8 for students.
