The Lexington Citizens’ Committee for the safety of School Children was recruiting volunteer cross guards to assist young students in cross two dangerous intersections – one at Main and Diamond streets and the other at Ross Road and Stonewall Street. - Area school officials received what one of them termed “very disheartening news.” Cutbacks in state aid to schools totaled $30,000 for Lexington and $83,000 for Rockbridge County. - Gov. Mills Godwin was present at Virginia Military Institute’s Founders Day events.

Buena Vista City Council adopted a resolution asking the Rockbridge Area Economic Development Commission and the Rockbridge Regional Industrial Development Authority not to enter into any agreements with MeadWestvaco over locating a distribution center in the Rockbridge Regional Industrial Park in Buena Vista. - The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors decided to borrow $15 million for the county’s share of the courthouse project, even though the latest estimates put the county’s share at $20 million.
