Wreaths Across America Event Returns

Wreaths Across America Event Returns

The national nonprofit Wreaths Across America has announced that the Evergreen Cemetery in Lexington will, as a local location for 2025, be joining in the mission to remember and honor all veterans interred in the Evergreen Cemetery. This is the second year that the cemetery will participate in this national program The wreath-laying program is being sponsored by Remembering Rockbridge Veterans (RRV), led by residents Ron Perkins and Russ Elliott.

A list of all veteran graves in the cemetery was developed through the efforts of Dennis Bussey, who has been cleaning veteran headstones in this and other local cemeteries. American flags have been placed at each veteran’s headstone to expedite wreath laying by the public on Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. Assistance is being provided by the VMI Building Bridges Club and the city of Lexington.

Remembering Rockbridge Veterans has obtained enough sponsors to place 120 veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of all the veterans laid to rest there, to ensure that the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of our country are never forgotten and to bring the community together in patriotic commemoration, said Perkins.

This year, there will be more than 5,000 participating locations placing veterans’ wreaths on National Wreaths Across America Day, Saturday, Dec. 13, with more than three million volunteers coming together to place wreaths on more than 3,000,000 veteran headstones Those interested in laying wreaths at the Evergreen Cemetery are invited to attend the wreath-laying ceremony.

“We are forever grateful for the thousands of supporters who dedicate their time, energy and resources to fulfilling our mission all year long,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America.
