Ninth-ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee University beat second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University in a shootout in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament championship game on Saturday in Lexington. It was the second consecutive ODAC title for the Generals.
Sarah Zimmerman of W&L (16-2-2 overall, 9-0-2 ODAC) scored in the 50th minute to tie the game 1-1. Neither W&L nor the Marlins (15-3-3, 8-1-1) scored in the two overtime periods.
W&L won the shootout 7-6. Sydney Devory, Bryn Bissinger, Megan Zimmerman, Helen Otteni, Sarah Zimmerman, Elizabeth Zimmerman and Kate McEnroe made their penalty kicks for the Generals. McEnroe, W&L’s sophomore goalkeeper, made four saves in the game, including one in the shootout.
Prior to the championship game, the Generals earned two tournament home wins, cruising to a 9-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in the quarterfinals on Nov. 1 before defeating Bridgewater College 3-2 in overtime last Wednesday.
With the win in the ODAC title game, the Generals earned the ODAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship tournament, which is scheduled to start on Friday. In the first round, the Generals will play host to in-state rival Marymount University (11-8-2) on Saturday at 11 a.m. For updates, visit www.generalssports.com.
