Beverly C. “John” Read defeated incumbent Eric Sisler in the race for commonwealth’s attorney. John Whitesell won a supervisor’s seat, defeating H.D. “Buster” Carter. - The Lexington Visitor Center was having its best year on record with a total of 3,434 visitors signing the register during October, compared to 1,140 the previous October. -A new Super-X drugstore was set to open next to Kroger on U.S. 11 North of Lexington.

Rockbridge County voters cast their ballots overwhelmingly in favor of staggered terms for members of the Board of Supervisors while 24th District Del. Ben Cline was returned to office by a comfortable margin over challenger David Cox. - Bobby Williams, the winningest football coach in Parry McCluer High School history, died at the age of 66. - Helen Thomas, longtime White House correspondent and syndicated columnist, spoke at Washington and Lee University. In her remarks, she called the George W. Bush administration “the most secretive I’ve ever covered.”
