Oct. 23, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Does anyone remember what an Eisenhower Republican was? They were the ones who believed in fiscal responsibility, honesty, integrity and self-reliance. Something like Sen. Rand Paul and Liz Cheney.
Today I saw the east wing of the White House demolished to make way for king Donald’s new $300 million ballroom. The government is shut down. We have long had a fiscal crisis building in this country. Today the gross national debt hit $38 trillion and king Donald spends your money and mine on a now estimated to be $300 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom (a football field is only 57,600 square foot) for who? For his self-aggrandizement, at our expense!
I know, he says it will be paid for with private donations and the White House has released a complete list of the donors. To date there are 37 donors but no dollar amount of their donation. Should we believe Donald? This is the guy that promised the wall would be paid for by Mexico. This is the guy who was convicted, unanimously, by a jury of his peers (the same jury that he helped select) of 34 felony counts of fraud. We should believe him now. I urge Republicans to return to the ideals that made the party great in the years before Nixon. ROBERT TEXTOR Rockbridge Baths
