DeLaney: Half-Century Of Service, And Counting
Patricia DeLaney has served as the treasurer for the city of Lexington for more than 50 years and is seeking another term to continue serving in that role for the city.
DeLaney and her family moved to Lexington in 1968 from Easthampton, New York. She was first appointed to the role of treasurer for the city in 1974 to fill the unexpired term of the retiring city treasurer, and was first elected to the position in 1977. She has an associate’s degree from Virginia Western Community College and a bachelor of arts degree from Emory and Henry College. Her husband, Theodore DeLaney, was a professor of history at Washington and Lee University until he retired in 2019, and their son, Damien DeLaney, is a practicing attorney in Los Angeles, Calif., where he lives with his family.
As treasurer, DeLaney is responsible for the collection of local taxes, including real estate, personal property and business tangible taxes, as well as other taxes and fees such as consumer utilities, bank franchises, public service corporations, dog license fees and trust taxes. Her office also receives payments for Virginia state estimated and income taxes, utility bill payments and other miscellaneous payments.
“As treasurer, one of my goals is to stay current with the changes in technology in order to perform the duties of the office more efficiently,” she said. “This includes the areas of customer service, banking, internal controls and financial management. As the custodian of the public’s money, insuring that all funds received are securely deposited, disbursed, managed and invested appropriately is a primary goal of the office.
“As treasurer, I continue to have as my goal for the office to be prepared to meet future challenges through the effective use of new management innovations and technological advancements,” she added. “It has been a distinct privilege to serve the citizens of the city of Lexington, and I look forward to new challenges and opportunities the future will bring.”
