After leading the Wildcats to the Shenandoah District title in his first year as head coach of the Rockbridge County High School golf team, Garret Huffman was named Shenandoah District coach of the year last Wednesday.
Hu f fma n , 22, replaced legendary head coach David Miller, who had guided the Wildcats for the last 13 years before stepping down. The firstyear coach is a 2021 RC graduate who played golf for the Wildcats in high school. With Huffman as freshman in 2017 and Miller coaching, the Wildcats had their highest finish in program history at the Class 3 state tournament, placing second.
RC switched from the Valley District to the Shenandoah District this year, with shorter travel distances. The Wildcats won all four of their 18-hole district matches to claim the district title and were one of two Shenandoah District teams to advance to the Region 3C tournament. The Wildcats concluded their season at the regional tournament, which took place on Sept. 29 at Spotswood Country Club in Harrisonburg, placing fifth of eight teams.
