The Lexington Sister City Exploratory Committee, hosted by local resident Don Hasfurther, held its latest meeting earlier this month to advance discussions on selecting a Ukrainian sister city. A group of 12 residents gathered to explore the best way to establish a meaningful, long-term relationship.
Initial meetings focused on which city size and region within Ukraine would be the best fit for Lexington. While the committee initially considered a similarly populated city in Eastern Ukraine due to the immense need for humanitarian aid, the focus has shifted towards slightly larger cities in Western Ukraine. This region offers a relative measure of safety and has experienced population growth due to displacement from the war on the Eastern and Southern borders. This increased stability would foster a more constructive relationship and allow for more robust cultural exchanges, a spokesperson said.
To ensure the new partnership truly reflects the needs and interests of the community, the committee has created a survey for local residents. The survey can be found at https://forms.gle/ew7sbrcpYGaHNWMS7.
