Collierstown

Deborah Potter McCormick, (540) 463-7652, [email protected] The members and friends of the Collierstown United Methodist Church came together on Sunday, Oct. 12, to celebrate homecoming and 185 years of ministry in the Collierstown community. The worship service was led by Rev. Doug Forrester, assistant to the bishop of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. Also in attendance were former ministers the Rev. Dave Breeden and the Rev. Bill Bearden and their wives, Phyllis Breeden and Wendy Bearden. Special music was provided by the men’s choir.

During the worship hour five members of the church were recognized for their decades of leadership and encouragement to the congregation. Those individuals were Claire Friend, Aubrey Manspile, Edith Rhodenizer, Moot Rhodenizer and Margaret Jane Wade.

The members of the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church joined with the Collierstown congregation to celebrate and worship together on this special day. A catered luncheon and fellowship time at the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department was enjoyed by those in attendance following the worship service.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., the Effinger Community churches and the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department will host a “trunk or treat” event in the parking lot at the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department. This year’s event will be filled with treats for the community’s children. Participating churches include the Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown Presbyterian, Collierstown United Methodist, Mt. Horeb United Methodist, Oxford Presbyterian, Rapps Church and the Union View Advent Christian Church. Make plans for an afternoon of fun and surprises.

Members and friends of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church are preparing for the church’s annual church dinner that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

This year’s annual dinner marks the 100th anniversary of the church’s first dinner held in 1925. Country ham, fried oysters and turkey dinners will be available for dining in or for taking out. All meals include homemade bread, home cooked vegetables, slices of cake and a choice of beverages. Takeout orders may be placed by calling the church at (540) 4635918 from noon until 6 p.m.

The bazaar building on the church grounds will be filled with crafts, breads, baked goods, fresh homemade soups and other specialty items for purchase. Sales from the bazaar will benefit the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Rockbridge County.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Collierstown United Methodist Church will host a spaghetti supper beginning at 5 p.m. The meal will include all-you-can-eat spaghetti, tossed salad, bread, dessert and assorted beverages. The cost of the meal is by donation.
