After condemning Governor Godwin’s 5% cut in school funds, the Rockbridge County School Board was studying ways to trim the budget by $64,800, the estimated minimum necessary to meet the government’s mandate. - Lexington school officials were hoping a cold snap would not set in before the installation of a new furnace for Lylburn Downing School.
- The Federal Communications Commission approved a franchise for a cable television operation in Glasgow.

A Conrock cement truck attempted to cross a bridge over Irish Creek and ended up destroying it, effectively stranding a community of 20 families. - Rain amounting to about 8 ½ inches in the Southern part of the county soaked the ground, hard from months of neardrought conditions. - The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to take out a loan with the Virginia Local Government Finance Corp. to finance the county’s share of the courthouse project. The amount of the loan application the county was to borrow was $16,239,625.
