Oct. 6, 2025 Editor, the News-Gazette: The GOP claim that the Democrats want to give health insurance to undocumented immigrants is a lie. In fact, undocumented immigrants are ineligible for federally funded health coverage, and no Democrat in Congress is trying to change that. Everyone agrees that fraud should be investigated when it occurs, but slashing funding for eligible people is not the answer.
It seems that, when they can’t come up with a legal or ethical argument for ending the ACA tax credits, causing 24 million Americans to either double their premiums or lose insurance altogether, they just make one up. They won’t admit that their actual reason is ensuring that their massive tax cut for billionaires stays in place, rather than continuing to appropriate the needed funds to allow middle- and lowincome people life-saving care.
Coming to the table and negotiating on this issue could end this damaging government shutdown. Instead, Republicans are digging their heels into an excuse based on a total falsehood. ANNETTE GREEN Rockbridge County
