Mayor Charles F. Phillips Jr. was attacked in his home by a young man wielding lawn clippers. Phillips was not injured and the assailant was taken to jail,. - Jennifer Wise, daughter of Col. and Mrs. Gene Wise, displayed miniature ceramic figures she made herself at the Rockbridge Regional Library. - The new Kroger Superstore opened on U.S. 11. The first 1,00 customers were given certificates for a free loaf of Village Bakery sandwich bread, a 56 cent value.

The man known to Buena Vista residents as David O’Malley, whose short-lived O’Malley’s restaurant on Magnolia Avenue served as a cover to allegedly swindle money and goods, was nabbed by police in Nebraska. - Todd Jones became mayor of Buena Vista upon the resignation of Harold Kidd. - Victoria Pannell was named the new director of the Lexington Downtown Development Association.
