‘Vote For Freedom Of Speech’ For All

Sept. 26, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Censorship is un-American. Public and private employers should be prohibited from firing employees for off-duty free speech. Are you for or against the First Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to free speech? Is free speech only for those who voice the government position, or does it apply to all Americans?

Not since the McCarthy era or the Red Scare has the government launched such a mammoth campaign of censorship as we have seen in the last few weeks, from the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel to the firing of teachers and government employees for voicing their opinions. Nonprofit groups are threatened with investigation on the basis of their beliefs, if these beliefs are counter to the government position.

Freedom is a value highly regarded by my neighbors in Rockbridge County. I hope that as we go to the polls this November and next year, we will vote for freedom and freedom of speech. DAPHNE RAZ Lexington
