Area residents are also invited to Washington and Lee University on Oct. 14 for a “Table Talks” program on Native art.
“Table Talks at the Kamen Gallery: Art, Insight & Lunch” will start at noon in the Kamen Gallery. This ongoing series is designed to foster inclusive dialogue, collaborative decision-making and a spirit of shared exploration.
Rebecca Hill, Pamunkey citizen with the Virginia Native Arts Alliance; Siera Hyte, Cherokee Nation citizen with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts where she is curator of Indigenous America Art; Pamunkey citizen artist and pop-up gallery exhibitor Ethan Brown; and W&L emeritus Harvey Markowitz will they dive into the longstanding “field” of Native art which is governed by its own knowledge systems, independent of Western and European art, and the importance of not lumping Native art into other canons.
Limited seating and tickets are free, but required. Visit https://my.wlu.edu/lenfest-center/ table-talks-at-kamen-galleryart- insight-and-lunch to request tickets.
The event is sponsored in part by the Class of ’64, Indigenous and Native American Cohort and Art and Art History.
