Household Hazardous Waste
Rockbridge County is offering its annual household hazardous waste collection this Saturday, Oct. 4, from 8 a.m. to noon at Maury River Middle School.
This is a great opportunity to safely and properly dispose of pesticides, fuels, used oil, antifreeze, household items containing mercury, solvents, sealants, cleaners/bleaches, oil-based paints (no latex paint), lithium batteries, and nickel-cadmium batteries (battery poles or connectors must be taped in order to be accepted).
Florescent bulbs, propane tanks, tires, alkaline batteries, and latex paint will not be accepted at the hazardous waste pick up this Saturday. Light bulbs and tires must be taken directly to our local landfill operated by the Blue Ridge Resource Authority during their normal hours of operation. Latex paint can be safely disposed of in our local landfill if the can is opened and allowed to thoroughly dry before arriving at the landfill.
People with old propane tanks should reach out to local suppliers of propane as they may be able to send them to a handler that can ensure they are completely empty before disposal or refurbishment. Because of potential hazards of propane tanks still containing some fuel, the Rockbridge solid waste disposal network cannot transport or handle them.
Concurring with Saturday’s Hazardous Waste Drop-off, will be a pet food drive to benefit Rockbridge SPCA. Donations of canned pet food especially are much appreciated.
