Caregivers Conference Next Month

In Virginia, more than one in four adults care for a friend or family member with a health problem or disability. Many of these individuals don’t even identify as “caregivers.” They are simply Bob’s wife, Carol’s son, or Jimmy’s friend. But when a loved one becomes too ill or frail to care for themselves, the relationship evolves. Suddenly, these everyday family and friends are running errands, assisting with baths, paying bills, giving medication — constantly adapting to needs that change and grow over time.

Tia Walker, author of “The Inspired Caregiver,” reminds us that “Caregiving often calls us to lean into love we didn’t know possible.” While the role can be deeply meaningful, it also brings tremendous strain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, caregivers are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, poorer physical health, and even increased risk of early death. Over half report that their own declining health affects their ability to care for loved ones.

To honor and support these essential care partners, Valley Program for Aging Services (VPAS) will host the fifth annual Confident Caregiver Conference on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Blue Ridge Community College.

Held in recognition of National Family Caregivers Month, this free, full-day event offers:

• A resource fair featuring local organizations;

• Educational sessions led by industry experts on a variety of caregiving topics;

• Opportunities for selfcare and relaxation, including chair massages and a group art project;

• Time to connect and share experiences with fellow caregivers.

This year’s highlights include: • Sonya Barsness, revisionary gerontologist and national advocate for person-centered care;

• A new Caregiver Skills Station for practical, handson learning;

• An in-depth Long-Term Care session led by the local ombudsman;

• A mesmerizing Music Therapy session with a professional harpist.

The Confident Caregiver Conference is designed to affirm, equip, and uplift caregivers by providing tools for self-care, practical education, and access to free resources. In doing so, it improves quality of life not only for caregivers and their loved ones, but for entire communities.

The conference will be held free of charge. Lunch will be provided, and attendees will enjoy a full day of practical, uplifting, and empowering content they can tailor to their specific needs. Registration is required. Visit vpas.info/ confident-caregivers-conferences or call VPAS at (540) 615-5341.
