Sept. 24, 1975

Area school superintendents struggled to cut their budgets by 5% following an order by Governor Godwin for an immediate reduction in state school aid. His decision was designed to prevent a $20 million shortfall statewide between the state’s expenses and revenues. - The motion picture “Jaws” was playing at the State Theater in Lexington. - Items belonging to Maj. James R. Berger while he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam were on display at the Virginia Military Institute Museum. Berger, who was a POW for six years, was a 1961 graduate of VMI.

Members of the Board of Supervisors knew how they wanted to finance the planned new courthouse complex – they just didn’t know how much they needed to borrow. - Residents in the area of Lime Kiln Road and McLaughlin Street in Lexington reported seeing a rather large and burly snake, probably 6 to 8 feet long. However, officers responding to the scene could not find such a serpent. - Sweet Treats Bakery opened on West Washington Street.
