Sept. 22, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Steve Hart represents the people of Kerrs Creek, not those that want an airport for private airplanes that will increase taxes.
His opponent, Boyd Brown, chair of the Rockbridge Economic Development Authority, is eagerly pushing for the airport through a study being funded by Rockbridge, Lexington and Buena Vista.
Mr. Brown takes Mr. Hart’s comments regarding budget and schools and distorts them because he knows that his strong support of the airport is not popular.
Mr. Hart will scrutinize budgets to ensure exemplary services are still delivered but search for savings for the residents who already pay high taxes. Rockbridge real estate tax is 64 cents per $100 and vehicle tax is $4.25 per $100. Augusta County is 52 cents per $100 and vehicle tax is $2.60. Amherst is 61 cents per $100 and vehicle tax $3.45. Yet Rockbridge is spiraling into deeper debt, currently $87 million! The CTE was about $12 million on a bond, paying interest, over years, but the other millions?
