Chris Wheeler was born and raised in Buena Vista, and has raised his two sons in the city as well. He has dedicated more than 30 years to a career in law enforcement.
During that time, he worked in various patrol and operational assignments, including investigating crimes against children under age 16. He also served as a member of the search and rescue team and assisted in teaching the DARE program’s curriculum to elementary school students.
One of the big focuses of his career has been on “creative, collaborative and community-based problem solving,” and he has performed free security assessments for churches, businesses and schools.
He retired from the Buena Vista Police Department in 2017, and since 2022 he has served Buena Vista Public Schools as the school security officer.
Wheeler said he is running for sheriff because he loves the community and is “committed to seeing your sheriff’s office meet the ever-changing challenges that society has placed on this profession.”
“The sheriff’s office is an extremely important position that must be occupied by an individual who has a long-term proven reputation of selfless service and integrity,” he said. “With my 30 years in law enforcement, I know this is what I have been called to do. My training and experience have prepared me to serve our city.”
If elected, Wheeler said he will ensure that “proper policies and procedures are in place to protect deputies and citizens,” and that he will “revamp security while courts are in session and judges are in the building.” He added that he believes in “proactive engagement,” which includes attending public meetings and partnering with the Buena Vista Police Department and school division.
“Improving relations with the community is a multifaceted task,” he said. “A key strategy would be to promote transparency in sheriff’s office operations, which builds trust and fosters open communication. These initiatives allow us to understand community concerns and provide necessary education to the community. Moreover, I’d encourage deputies to participate in community events and make a presence at our schools and local businesses. This not only humanizes the deputy but also strengthens bonds between them and citizens.
“Lastly, implementing fair and unbiased practices is crucial,” he said. “Ensuring that all community members are treated with respect regardless of their background will help establish a positive reputation for our office.
“I truly love our city and want to continue to make a difference,” he said. “If I have the privilege to serve as sheriff, I can assure the citizens of Buena Vista the sheriff’s office will have an open door policy. I’m also happy to speak to the citizens with any concerns or questions they may have.”
